In the upper part of the room at the base of the front tower, on the floor that has now disappeared, there are some loophole windows that were almost certainly used for letting light into the room but would also have been part of the Castle’s defensive system, since as they faced the main entrance they would allow people to defend the tower by firing from within and enjoying a certain amount of protection.
